Information for Participants

This research into the experiences of online moderators is being conducted by Margaret Emerton under the supervision of Dr Kate Bowles.

Information gathered in the forum and interviews will be used to prepare an honours thesis as part of my Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Community and Environment at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. It may be used for related purposes- including public presentations, or publication in academic journals. By posting in the forums, or taking part in the interviews, you are agreeing that it is all right for me to use what you post in these ways.

If you participate in the research, you can choose to remain anonymous, use your real name, or provide a pseudonym. You can refuse to participate at any time, and you can withdraw your participation, including any material you have contributed, by contacting me.

Only material that you offer voluntarily will be collected. Details on the consent form are sent to my email address by  a remailer at my Internet Service Provider, and no data is collected by cookies or spyware. The forum software is hosted by a third party. It may set cookies to handle passwords if your browser allows it to.

It is unlikely that participating in this research could expose you to any risks other than those you might normally face when using the Internet. Other participants might write something that you find offensive. Information that you send  via the Web or email might be intercepted or viewed by people it was not intended for. Access to what you post on the forums is limited to registered users, but the site is not secure. What you post will be available for the researchers and others participants to read. There is a risk that they might disclose information to other people.

When you are discussing the groups you have moderated, it is important not to tell me anything that might identify any of your members, unless you have their permission. I undertake to treat any information you give me cautiously. I reserve the rights not to include things you have told me, and to remove from view any material that might be illegal or actionable under Australian law.

You may ask to see or change material that is directly based on your data at any time. You can choose your level of involvement with the research, and whether or not you want to have or maintain contact with me. Any personal contact details you give me will be destroyed on completion of the project or on request.

All material other than personal contact details collected on the forum or in  interviews will be archived. After my thesis is completed this material  will be stored securely by the University of Wollongong for five years.
