BENDOC
The Gateway to Isolation & BeautyIn 1852 William Clarke, an Anglican clergyman and sparetime geologist, discovered gold in the area now known as Bendoc. By 1868 a small township was developed around the Phoenix Crusher on the present site of Bendoc.
One of the few visible reminders of Bendoc township's golden hertiage is a steam boiler lying on the bank of the Bendoc River 50 metres downstream from the road bridge, which is visible from the bridge, 300 metres west of the Commerical Hotel, which is the only waterhole between Orbost and Bendoc. It is located opposite a former crushing battery site and central to the old quartz reef mining field.
Directions: After leaving Orbost and travelling along the beautifully stunning Bonang Road for 90 Kilometres take a right turn at the Gap Road which will take you to the township of Bendoc. The Gap Road in its beauty can be slippery if wet.
