Task force to probe Port Kembla operating conditions

The NSW Government has ordered a special task force of technical experts to investigate Port Kembla Copper's capacity to meet its strict operating conditions.

The state's Planning Minister, Dr Andrew Refshauge, ordered the investigation after three explosions rocked the site on Saturday night, when 100 tonnes of molten copper overflowed from a furnace.

The smelter is expected to be shut down for up to 10 days while repairs take place.

Dr Refshauge says he wants to ensure the strict environmental conditions for the smelter are being met.

[Illawarra Mercury states that the blasts, which occurred just before 6pm on Saturday, not only shook nearby homes and windows but also rattled workers, who had to be evacuated. It also caused concern among residents who claimed the company had failed to address emergency protocol. No-one was injured in the explosions, which sparked a fire in the anode casting area. ...
