Australian Democrat MLC and member of 'Doctors for Forests', Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has welcomed the Premier's announcement regarding the use of timber residues for power generation.
The Premier announced at a fundraiser for the Total Environment Centre, that the Public Sector will now have to comply with triple bottom line principles and timber residues from native forests will be prohibited for use in electricity generation.
"The Democrats are encouraged by the recent developments and we will support any legislative reform to see it through."
"The Democrats oppose the use of native timbers for bio-mass electricity generation. However, we are concerned about the continued use of plantation timber residues as this will only contribute to Greenhouse gases."
"While the Democrats congratulate the Premier's initiatives,
we are still interested to see if he will continue to support
the Mogo charcoal smelter. Stopping this project will show that
the Premier really does care about the environment." Dr Chesterfield-Evans
concluded.
