The Charcoalition is organising a public meeting in Moruya to inform the whole community about the proposal to build a charcoal factory between Mogo and Moruya, just 3 klms west of Broulee. "This large scale heavy industry will convert 200,000 tonnes of trees per year, from our valuable native forests, into 35,000 tonnes of charcoal and an even larger amount of sawdust. This charcoal will be transported to Lithgow and used as a reductant for the production of metallic silicon. At the Mogo factory many tens of thousands of tonnes of other waste materials will also be produced and must be dealt with. An industrial facility of this size will mean a substantial increase in the number of heavy trucks using our narrow regional roads and highways and will have an as yet unquantifiable impact on the potential to grow our tourism industry. Another unknown will be health and lifestyle impacts for businesses and residential communities close to the factory and major transport routes", said Mr Chris Kowal a spokesperson for the Charcoalition.
Mr Kowal went on to say "Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting which will be held at Moruya Public School Hall in Evan Street Moruya, just up from the intersection with Campbell Street. The meeting will be on Saturday 20 th October commencing at 3pm." "Speakers from the company and Government have been invited to give short presentations, so that all aspects of the proposal can be considered and discussed in a public forum following the presentations. It is Charcoalition's intention that our community be well informed so that they are in the best position to respond to the Australian Silicon Environmental Impact Statement when it is released later in the year for public exhibition and comment".
So that the Charcoalitioner's can relax and have some fun from the rigors of campaign work they will be holding a fundraising benefit at 'Old Mogo Town' Hall. Come along and burn the night away, and not the forest on Sunday 21st October from 4pm to 10pm. Everyone is welcome to enjoy live music featuring Syncopated Swingers, Spicey Fruit Chutney, Rob Brooking and Cindy Reid and meet the tireless Charcoalition team. Tickets are $10 for adults at the door and children are free.
