The NSW Opposition today urged Australian Silicon, the proponents of the Wood Processing and Metallurgical Carbon Facility (charcoal plant) on the State's Far South Coast, to move their proposed production plant from it's planned site between Mogo and Moruya to Bombala.
Shadow Minister for Planning John Brogden, in conjunction with Bega MP Russell Smith and Monaro MP Peter Webb, today called on the Carr Government to step in and facilitate the move from south of Mogo to Bombala.
"The Opposition believes this is the right project but in the wrong place", Shadow Minister for Planning John Brogden said today.
"Local residents have raised legitimate concerns about the charcoal plant.
"The Carr Government should listen to the local community and facilitate the move to Bombala.
"Last week I met with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and General Manager of Bombala Council. They indicated they were willing to receive approaches to move the project to Bombala.
The Member for Bega Russell Smith said it is obvious from the level of objections that it is not the right site for the project and is out of keeping with the character of the thriving tourist area.
"It should be placed in an area with compatible industries and Bombala is such a place," Mr Smith said.
Member for Monaro Peter Webb said the charcoal plant is well suited to Bombala and would be well received.
"Bombala needs a project of this size. The current soft wood mill proposal may have fallen through and this project could provide much needed jobs and opportunities for Bombala", Mr Webb said today.
"Bombala is also one of the few towns in the South East that is accessible by B-double trucks.
John Brogden, Russell Smith and Peter Webb have asked to meet with Australian Silicon Limited soon to discuss the proposal to move the Silicon project to Bombala.
