It would seem that Australian Silicon and the State Government for that matter, have under estimated the will of the local people on the subject of the Charcoal Factory. In doing so, they have done an incredible injustice to the Nation as a whole, if some of the words in the EIS are to be believed. Basically it said, that we the locals were meant to suffer for the good of the State or Nation (or words to that effect). The problem is, we dont want to suffer! Many have relocated having been sick of suffering the ill effects of the Cities. Over population, smog, noise and everything else thats a negative for city living, forced most people over the past 20 years, to move into the district. Without the charcoal plant, many more should continue to depart for better, cleaner and more peaceful and fulfilling lifestyles. Our way of life is precious and locals including our retirees and indigenous people, all have a right to live here with our main stay industries supporting us without invasion from massive and heavy industries.
Ironically, there was an announcement recently that there is another state significant project that Bob Carr has decided to remove from local council. Its at Barlings Beach, which is just a few klms from the charcoal site. This is a residential development. In that EIS, there are some interesting statistics on expected population growth and socio economic impacts for the region. It begs the question, how can the government consider both developments? They appear to be at complete odds. One is to increase the population and quality of lifestyle whilst the other is to infect the population and diminish the value of the region!
Things are definitely happening!
Just a quick comment on whats happening locally. I often hear people say that things have gone a bit quite lately. I say to the contrary my dear! Things are well underway to fight this in the courts, should the factory get the go ahead.
There is so much wrong with the site that it enables numerous issues to be fought and several people have been to Sydney to see the Barristers who also agree that there are numerous fighting points. Water, noise, consultation, proximity to homes, schools, businesses and retirement homes, pollution, traffic impacts but probably the underestimated case is that of false and misleading statements in the EIS that many submissions claimed had occurred including Government Departments like the NPWS. If it is the case, then shouldnt ACCC be looking at the documents!
The one thing morally that seems to be an argument, is Bob Carrs announcement that it was going ahead end of story. A frequent comment from locals is possible interference in due process or worst still, undue pressure from a superior in Government. In these circumstances, presumptuous comments compromise the outcomes regardless.
Finally, a meeting will be held soon to update everyone on
the results of the submissions, alternatives to Charcoal and the
many courses of legal action if needed. This should involve scientists,
lawyers and other informed specialists.
