Help Stop Climate Change!
WHAT WE DO
Coastwatchers Association works for:
- The creation of environmentally friendly jobs, for which
there is plenty of scope
- Maintaining our clean healthy catchments and coasts
- Recognition that people are part of the environment, and
not separate from it
- Planned development with as little environmental destruction
as possible
- Ecologically sustainable management of our forests
- Empowering our community to live and work together sustainably
- Planning to avoid the piecemeal detrimental impacts of development
which so often occurs
- Ensuring the community's hard won environmental gains are
not lost
- Fair international trade, because the present WTO rules are
a threat to the environment and a just society.
Coastwatchers has been involved in numerous
successful operations:
- Stopping the proposed Mogo
Charcoal plant
- Stopping the Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) shooting complex (this
development would have threatened public safety, caused lead
pollution of oyster growing areas, major noise impacts for neighbours,
and desecration of Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) a significant aboriginal
sacred site.
- The preservation of the Cullendulla wetlands
- The modification of environmentally poor policies, plans
and development proposals
- The dedication of the Eurobodalla National Park
- The work of river catchment and estuary management committees
- The inclusion of sensible constraints on forestry practices
- The raising of environmental awareness in the community.

Here are just a few of the things that Coastwatchers are currently
doing --
- Suggesting ways people can help with the Climate
Change issue
- Lobbying for more environmentally sustainable coastal development
- Trying to prevent excessive clearing for subdivisions - to
give buyers the opportunity to build with nature instead of destroying
it. (Did you know endangered animals such as Yellow Bellied Gliders
still share some of our settlements?)
- Working to change forest management practices - so that only
the least sensitive coupes are intensively logged, and wood-chipping
is phased out
- Endeavouring to have jetskis banned from the Shire, or at
have them tightly restricted to areas that do not conflict with
other users and that result in minimum noise pollution
- Closely monitoring Council meetings
- Commenting on draft proposals, planning controls and the
like that affect our area
