Our Association objects to this proposal on the same grounds that we opposed the extension of Narooma Plaza at this time. It pre-empts the Narooma Structure Plan. We ask that it be put on hold and assessed after the Structure Plan is complete. If this is not possible we ask that it be refused and the applicant invited to resubmit it at the appropriate time.
Coastwatchers would like the opportunity to make a deputation to Councillors if/when they consider this proposal.
Reasons
Narooma residents have demonstrated their strong concerns that the Structure Plan for their town ensures that its character and scenic qualities are maintained.
The Draft Plan recommends the downgrading of Narooma Plaza and increasing commercial/retail development on the flat. Large scale development on the flat is strongly opposed by our members and most residents in Narooma.
It is essential that the Structure Plan for Narooma is finalised to the satisfaction of the majority of residents before major developments are approved for either the Narooma Plaza or the flat. If this does not happen Narooma could have its character and scenic qualities destroyed and end up with three main competing retail centres adversely impacting on the social and economic life of its citizens.
