MODIFICATION TO SHOPPING CENTRE,
STOCKLANDS PLAZA, CLYDE STREET, BATEMANS BAY

The Coastwatchers Association objects strongly to this modification because it appears to reduce the number of parking spaces. This comes on top of a reduction in spaces that resulted from the recently approved DA for refurbishment of the Clyde Plaza shopping centre.

Coastwatchers supports Council's plans to improve the Clyde River foreshore and to make some of the Clyde Street carpark into a grassed area for community events, and for locals and visitors to enjoy. However, Council's ability to reduce carparking in the present Clyde Street carpark depends to a large extent on commercial developments providing all the parking that will be needed for their businesses.

Stocklands is a very wealthy company and can well afford to buy the land it needs to improve access for delivery vehicles while at the same time increasing the number of parking spaces to cope with the inevitable increase in demand that will come when the refurbishment is completed and shops occupied. The site of the old Caltex station on the corner of Clyde Street is an obvious choice.

We understand that this Plaza shopping center will be completely redeveloped some time in the future and undercover parking will then be provided. Purchase of the Caltex site would enhance the whole site for redevelopment and would in no way disadvantage Stocklands.

We urge Council to reject this application to modify the Development Application and insist that Stocklands provide adequate parking for all the businesses that will operate when the shopping center is refurbished and fully occupied.
