Peter ( Doc) Hellmrich

11.5.1948 – 1.01.10

This year's event was named in honour of keen local surfer and long time friend of the club members, Pete Hellmrich, affectionately known as "Doc", who passed away at the start of the year.

In naming the event in Pete's honour we acknowledge his achievement as the winner of the Legends trophy in the 1998 aniMal contest. The picture, below, shows Pete in action on the day.

Pete was well known amongst the local residents, and the surfing fraternity in particular. At his memorial celebration of life, held in February at Pambula River Mouth, around 80 surfers paddled out to make a large circle and spread Pete's ashes, in a symbol of affection and respect to their mate.

Tributes to Pete

At the celebration of Pete's life, John Smythe gave a wonderful eulogy about his friendship with Pete that spanned about 50 years. Read it here.

Henry delivered a terrific poem for Pete that struck a chord with many in the crowd. Read it here.

T-shirts

This year's contest T-shirt featured the picture of Pete on a wave as shown above. These shirts can be bought for $30. Please contact John.

Pete's sister Kerrie travelled from Sydney for the event and received a special trophy for the family, from the club.

The Doctor Malibu

Merimbula Sailboard Club hosted the 24th annual Malibu competition at Merimbula’s Main Beach on Saturday 22nd May.
Competitors came from Warnambool & Lakes Entrance in Victoria, from the NSW south coast and we even had one American student who mixed it with a keen group of local surfers for a great day of surfing the malibus.

This year's event honoured the late Peter “Doc” Hellmrich and there was no surprise when Saturday dawned with a clean 4 foot swell that pumped all day. Surfers found it a struggle catching good waves as there was a gnarly close out occurring on a very shallow bank, but those who did got some really good waves throughout the day treating spectators to a great day's surfing.
Throughout the day standouts emerged particularly surfers such as Narooma’s Ray Lawrence and locals Josh Keogh, Chris Wright, Phil Overend and juniors Clancy Mills and Taylor McNeill.
There were also some keen surfers as young as 12 who were giving it a shot along with the over 60’s competitors such as Henry Jones and David Pimm.
From a starting line up of seventy surfers, the judges and the waves whittled the crew down to the final six who surfed a great final with Ray and Josh going head to head. In the end it was Ray over Josh, but only just, with Kane McKill coming in third pushing out junior Clancy Mills and regular top placers Chris Wright and Phil Overend.

At the presentation in the Lakeview Hotel trophies and prizes were awarded to the finalists and category winners with the major prize of a custom Bushrat surfboard going to Taylor Mc Neill who surfed consistently all day and was unlucky to just miss the finals. The new custom made surfboard was generously donated by Bushrat and Red Bull.
